Data Science For Our Mental Development

#artificialintelligence

Emotion is a fundamental element of human society. If you think about it, everything worth analyzing is influenced by human behavior. Cyber attacks are highly impacted by disgruntled employees who may either ignore due diligence or engage in insider misuse. The stock market depends on the effect of the economic climate, which itself is dependent on the aggregate behavior of the masses. In the field of communication, it is common knowledge that what we say account for only 7% of the message while the rest 93% is encoded in facial expressions and other non-verbal cues.

However, existing online learning techniques typically applied to robot learning (for example, Hexmoor, Meeden, and Murphy [1997]) differ fundamentally from human learning. Online root learning using robot sensors is not equivalent to autonomous mental development in robots, nor should mental develop-This article describes a workshop on mental development and learning issues that are relevant to both machine and human sciences. It was jointly funded by the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and held at Michigan State University on 5 to 7 April 2000. Such systems already exist (for example, systems that use neural network techniques). There is a need, therefore, for increased studies in computational autonomous mental development (CAMD) that are of interest to both machine and human intelligence researchers.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, neuroscience and robotics have stimulated the birth and growth of a new research field, known as computational autonomous mental development. Although human mental development is a wellknown subject of study, e.g., in developmental psychology, computational studies of mental development for either machines or humans had not received sufficient attention in the past. Mental development is a process during which a brain-like natural or artificial embodied system, under the control of its intrinsic species-specific developmental program residing in the genes or artificially designed, develops mental capabilities through its autonomous real-time interactions with its environments (including its own internal environment and components) using its own sensors and effectors. The scope of mental development includes cognitive, behavioral, emotional and all other mental capabilities that are exhibited by humans, higher animals and artificial systems. Investigations of the computational mechanisms of mental development are expected to improve our systematic understanding of the working of the wide variety of cognitive and behavioral capabilities in humans and to enable autonomous development of these highly complex capabilities by robots and other artificial systems.

It is time to start building machines which can learn and be raised in the same way as humans, the authors of an article in the journal Science say. But computer scientist Professor Juyang Weng, of Michigan State University, US, says it is time to work on systems which "live" autonomously, have bodies suited to their working environment and learn in a general sense. "According to this paradigm, robots should be designed to go through a long period of autonomous mental development, from'infancy' to'adulthood'. "The essence of mental development is to enable robots to autonomously live in the world and to become smart on their own, with some supervision by humans," he writes. Making computers copy the way humans learn should not be as difficult as it sounds if scientists can uncover the underlying principles of mental development.
